About the Author
For MarShall, who lives in North Carolina, the Appalachian setting has personal roots. One of nine children, she grew up poor and draws on her family’s history in the hills. Her understanding of a girl who feels unseen comes from experience. Her enduring marriage, years as a mother, and love of history also inform the story.
